I Feel a Coat Coming on

It couldn’t be hotter here in the city. Sure we get a few days of glorious cool summer weather where everyone walks around with a smile. But with Hurricane Earl sputtering out somewhere south the dregs of that storm will crank the temps here for the next week or so. As I hunker down in the deep end of the pool or in the farthest recesses of my apartment I think about how nice it’ll be to need to pull on a coat. The question is what coat could that be?

I’d like a nice clean overcoat that is not too tailored. I don’t mean one devoid of all detail, just one that is a little vague in its shape. That way you can put it over anything without it dictating what that anything can be. Black and charcoal grey are great war horses but so can a navy one. Navy is the new default black in my imagination these days. Acne Studios has a few styles that are exactly what I’m talking about: The Charles, Charlie,  Garret and Min jacket.

The Charles is a roomier coat with a drop shoulder and ample sleeve. The Charlie is almost the same but with a more tailored fit. Both coats are a wool and cashmere blend that looks and feels fantastic. If you like a shorter coat more in the vein of a car coat, the Min jacket is a wide shorter coat that falls to just below the seat with a wide sleeve. It’s ideal over bulky layers or a big sweater and scarf. It’s restrained blue is just this side of vibrant.

For good measure, the Garret above is a more tailored offering but smart in its length. Finishing at just above the knee, this coat looks modern and a bit formal but without any of the stuffiness. Personally, I’d take all of them. The Charles in charcoal, Charlie in navy, Min in blue and Garret in camel. Take a look and see what works for you.
