There aren’t that many collections out there for men that make much sense. For the most part you get the same old sportswear that could be anybody’s or crazy stuff that’s more deconstructed judo outfit with too many loose ties dragging than fashion. Two extremes is what we have with precious little in that gaping middle, and I might add there’s a dearth of style in this roiling sea of fashion. That isn’t to say I don’t love some Ralph Lauren staples to keep my boat afloat. I’ve even been guilty of droopy drawers fantasies a la Rick Owens, but then the price tag snaps me out of my reverie. So Agi and Sam based in London are that rare duo who offer clothes that have their basis in the classics but tread the razor’s edge of the new.
The thing I like most about them is their child like quality. The proportions are somewhat haphazard, the colors are primary and the materials are rich. A relaxed feel threads its way throughout a collection that addresses all the needs of a contemporary man: a suit, raincoat, sweaters, casual pants, shirts, you name it it’s there. That those elements in themselves are often abstracted by means of scale makes the whole look of their work transgressive and fresh.
The sweaters and striped shirts seduced me first. Chocolate and navy together in most anything makes me stand and take notice. The deep dark navy suit with its boxier jacket and more generous pant makes me want to dress up. The Fez on the model’s head is tempting too. The navy boiler suit is a sleek overall with sex appeal. Remember, if the overall is just right, all anyone will want to do is peel it off of you….! The mini check wool cut in pants, coats and shirts is a rich fluid classic wool tailored in a freewheeling way. Best of all you can pluck any of the looks out of their context and weave them into your existing wardrobe. It’s time that men had some fun with fashion. Championing the promising horses out of the gate makes for a better playing field down the line.
