My sister blogger Jolain Muller of PrimaDarling.com has the right idea. Having just done a story on black clothing and its appropriateness, she got me thinking about the power of black. In fashion black is the new black and has remained that way for close to 20 years. I remember when suddenly coming down from my studio just off of 7th Avenue and seeing a sea of black clothed fashionators. It seemed that the Japanese design juggernaut back then led by Rei Kawakubo of Commes des Garcon changed the palette from color to black over night. I held out a long time before giving in.
What a revelation! It looked good for work, in public and was the easiest way to get dressed. Two things to keep in mind: first, there are many shades of black so be aware and try to keep the pieces as black as possible. And second, tons of colors look great with black so it doesn’t have to be a monochromatic story. You can beef it up with white, strong colors, dark browns, navy, greys and neutral colors in shirts, sweaters, shoes, whatever and it looks even better. Black has a way of making everything you pair it with and that includes you, look more vivid, more attractive. There’s no downside only plusses.
So get up, get dressed and take it to the streets. Now is the time to reclaim a position of power; Black Power.
