The temperature is about to rise to the 90’s and I for one am starting to panic just a bit. There’s a song by Joni Mitchell I associate with heatwaves. Listen if you like as you read ……
I’ve never done well in the heat even as a little kid. My parents are from the south, the hot south, and would take us to visit our relatives as kids. In Virginia and North Carolina the summer is unrelentingly hot. Air conditioning then was for the rich and my family wasn’t rich. A fan or cross ventilation was about it. I remember sticking to everything especially the clear plastic covers that encased all of the furniture at the homes of my grandparents and cousins. The cars there were no better as they too were covered in textured plastic. A hose in the backyard was as good as it got.
Then something changed in my life that made the heat even more unbearable. I started figure skating at 10 and continued through high school. For 4 hours everyday and 11 months of the year I was inside skating rinks with an average temperature of about 45 degrees. After so many years of that my system could barely stand temps over 80 degrees. It’s taken years to get over the heat.
It wasn’t until I started riding horses seriously that I got past the discomfort of sweaty clothes, blazing sun and humidity. My horses would go south with my trainer to Wellington, Florida outside of Palm Beach from November til April each year and I’d commute on weekends to train and compete.
It was the intense pleasure I got from riding that eliminated my aversion to the heat. After a lesson on Bailiwick or Gomer, my beautiful brave boys, everything would be soaked down to my underwear. Those lessons though at 9 am were outside in the blazing sun and southern Florida heat.
What’s shocking is I couldn’t care less and would have to be dragged away from the barn. Every second was pure pleasure. Now I’m able to manage the heat and am proud of the fact that I’ve finally grown up, a little.
Nowadays, when the temperature spikes I’m likely to be found afloat in the pool here on the weekends. You can find me on a float in the shaded deep end with my phone or iPad watching figure skating or a Dressage competition on YouTube wearing little more than a contented smile and shades.
This heatwave like everything else in life shall pass! BUT, if none of this high-minded talk speaks to you, get your hands on this sucker from Amazon. Trust me, it works efficiently and quietly !!! Friedrich Kuhl AC !!!! No matter what your remedy is, stay cool, stay hydrated and stay happy!!!
