Windbreakers are some of the most unheralded articles of clothing in the pantheon of essential modern design. It used to be about a trench coat. Then it was the perfect cashmere coat in black or camel. Let’s not forget the anorak craze of the last several years. All along right under our noses is the perfect workhorse cover-up, the windbreaker.
I first fell for them back in college and then in the ensuing years forgot them. A couple a seasons ago, I stumbled into a Prada store in Germany and found myself face to face with a rack of beautiful nylon hooded windbreakers in black on the outside and a contrasting color inside. Black/sand, black/steel blue, black/smokey grey and black/olive green. With their bright steel zippers gleaming I was hard pressed to choose. With Paris, Austria and Istanbul all on the itinerary before returning to NYC, I figured it would come in handy at some point.
More than just handy, that windbreaker was my go-to jacket for the remainder of the trip. In Austria I wore it over a sweater and down vest for warmth. In Paris it shielded me from rain and wind. In Istanbul it did double duty as a practical covering and at night it was a cool piece that went with everything. As easy to pack as it is to keep clean (wash/dry) I have become a hardcore windbreaker afficianado!
Here are some favorites and ALL are on SALE. A few I’ve added to my mix and some others I pine for. With sales happening everywhere, now is the perfect time to get one or more……
